Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

BEDFORDS, which celebrate their golden jubilee this year, were advertised some 45 years ago as able to take a 50 per cent overload. Vauxhall Motors describe this as "a brave and confident claim." Whether it wa wise is another matter.

Before plating was introduced a woman haulier complained bitterly to me about the performance of her Bedfords. I took the matter up with the makers, who on investigating found that the operator was under the impression that the rated maximum gross weight was the payload capacity. That was rather more than a 50 per cent overload and explained a lot.
