THE Conservative Party Transport Committee hope to meet Mr. R. A. Butler, Leader of the House of Commons, to persuade the Government to grant relief to rural bus operators.

A meeting at Llandrindod Wells, last week, attended by representatives of the County Parish Councils Association, bus operators and Mr. C. R. Hodgson, chairman of the South Wales Traffic Commissioners, decided to call a conference of all county • authorities to discuss the problem of rural bus services. A Government subsidy for areas such as Radnorshire is to be recommended.

Mr. Hodgson said that Radnorshire and Montgomeryshire, among other counties, might have a strong case for a subsidy for unremunerative services. He intended to place the question on the agenda of the next quarterly meeting of the Traffic Commissioners to be held at Cardiff on July 9.

PUSH-CHAIR LOAN SCHEME • TO ATTRACT TRAFFIC

E'ROM the beginning of next month,

parents who travel into Maidstone on the buses of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., will he able to obtain push-chairs for their young children on loan free of charge from the Mill Street and Stone Street bus stations, on production of their journey tickets.

Mr. Stanley Smith, traffic manager of the company, said on Tuesday that the introduction of one-man buses had enabled many rural services to be kept going, but even so the number of passengers barely justified the operation of some of them. It was thought that the push-chair scheme would encourage travel by people who were tied to the house by small children. • No deposit will be required for the loan of a push-chair, but borrowers must supply their names and addresses and return the chairs the same day. It will be possible to reserve a chair in advance.

£400,000 BY-PASS PLANS

pLANS for the construction of a South Mimms by-pass, 1+ miles long and estimated to cost more than £400,000, are to be pushed forward by the Minister of Transport. It will form part of the improved road between London and the Park Street terminal of the St. Albans by-pass.
