I AST Tuesday, British Railways
brought into service on the DoverBoulogne short sea route the latest and largest motor-vehicle ferry, the s.s. "Lord Warden." This is a twin-screw turbine ship built and engined by William Denny and Bros., Ltd.
Designed on the "first on, first off" principle, the garage on the ship has a car turntable which permits entry and exit through the folding steel doors at the stern and over a special ramp which has been constructed at Boulogne. A similar ramp is to be built at Dover and, eventually, another at Calais.
A clear deck height of 10 ft. 6 ins. over the major portion of the car space allows motor coaches to be carried. In addition, there is room for a number of double-deck buses in a well, at the aft end of the promenade deck. Fans ensure that fumes are rapidly.dispersed, fire-proof curtains divide the car space into four compartments, and . an automatic sprinkler and fire alarm system protects both garage and passenger accommodation. The ship has a speed of 20 knots. There are eight cabins with two settee seat berths and toilet; and a restaurant for 140.
