• A fine of £50 for failing to issue an employee with a driver's record book was imposed by Norwich magistrates last week. Manandrew Holdings Ltd, Norwich, was also fined £50 for unauthorized use of a goods vehicle.

A traffic examiner, Mr Kenneth I. Potter, prosecuting, told the court that the vehicle had been stopped at Southend and was found to have no disc. The driver, Andrew Richardson, who also said he was a director of the company, said that he had understood from Norfolk police that because he did not do deliveries he did not need an 0 licence. For this reason he did not have a driver's record book.

Mr Potter told the court that when seen Richardson admitted owning the vehicle. Richardson had told him, said Mr Potter, that he had been misled by Norfolk police after he had called at a police station. The police had said they would look into the matter of licensing. Richardson had also said an 0 licence had been applied for but there was no trace of an application.

The company, which wrote to the court pleading guilty, said it felt it had been misled by a statement by the police.
