• London Transport's front-engined integral double-decker, the Routemaster, proved to be the highest scoring British double-decker in a study of European high-capacity buses recently completed by Transport Surveys and Research.

The study was undertaken for the National Transportation Centre of Pittsburgh which is responsible for a Super-Bus being designed and developed with American Government funds. The bus will meet the needs of a consortium of urban transport operators in the US.

The study covered .every European manufacturer of double-deck and articulated buses and most city undertakings were also approached. Operators were asked to give their assessment of their vehicles in each of 14 different categories.

Analysis of the results showed that no undertaking was dissatisfied with the performance of its vehicles. However, a number of faults was reported regarding maintenance aspects. Problem areas on individual vehicles included engine and transmission life, cooling system performance, body structure and articulation arrangements, Noise was also a problem.
