Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"When the Sentinel steam waggons were introduced late in 1905, they brought new lustre to the name, and a reputation of their own which was further enhanced by the Super-Sentinel waggon 1923. From the latter stemmed other developments — the steam tractors and the portable engines, the Sentinel-Cammell rail coaches, and the famous Sentinel steam rail locomotives which were to be produced until the late 1950s and were superseded only by the dieselhydraulic locomotives, still called 'Sentinel' which are currently produced at the same works by Rolls-Royce Ltd."

This quote from the introduction of The Sentinel — A history ofAlley and MacLellan and the Sentinel Waggon Works gives a readable indication of the scope and interest of the book, which was written by W. J. Hughes and Joseph L. Thomas and is published at £5.95 by David and Charles (Holdings) Ltd, South Devon House, Newton Abbot, Devon.

It is a remarkable book in that it combines nostalgic but highly readable references to the triumphs of the company, notably in the development of the Super Sentinel waggon, with detailed technical analysis of the motive units produced. To any technically minded reader interested in steam, the informed appraisal of development work stage-bystage involved in the evolution of the Super Sentinel and other steamers offers a fascina ting study.
