• What has been described by the Road Haulage Association as a stimulating business programme for its annual conference in Edinburgh was issued this week. The conference opens on October 16 with an address by the chairman and there follows a discussion on the problem of labour shortage as it applies particularly to heavy goods vehicle drivers. The subject will be examined by Mr Alex Kitson, TGWU, Mr Peter Haxby, RTITB, and the chairman of the RHA Labour Relations Committee, Mr A. R. Butt. Following this delegates will be able to participate in a question and answer session.

The luncheon speaker, Mr Alistair Matthews, assistant manager of the exploration department of British Petroleum Ltd, will talk to the delegates on North Sea oil and gas exploration.

The afternoon speaker has yet to be named but his subject will cover the vital parts which roads and road transport play in the viability of regions. Wednesday morning is to be devoted to Transport and the Environment. Mr Richard Casement of the Economist, will discuss the limitations of transferring traffic from road to rail. Following this Dr Clifford Sharp of the Economics Department of Leicester University, and Mr Morris Lindsay, Director of the Scottish Civic Trust, will debate the subject of lorries and the environment.

The last business session will be a talk-back by delegates.

Conference headquarters will be the North British Hotel and delegates will also be accommodated at The George and Carlton hotels and the King James which is still under construction.
