Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• London hauliers are worried about Hilton Transport Services' plan to employ dock labour in its new container depot at Surrey Docks which is due to become operational in late summer.

At last week's meeting of the Road Haulage Association's Metropolitan and South Eastern area a resolution was carried which expressed concern at the HTS decision to employ dock labour at dock rates, and asked the Association to consider what action might be taken.

Suggestions that hauliers were asking for

HTS's resignation from the RHA if it went ahead with this plan were strongly denied. An area member told CM after the meeting that there was no question of this, but hauliers were genuinely concerned at the implications of a big London haulier agreeing to pay dock labour rates in order to use dock (or ex-dock) premises without provoking industrial relations trouble.

The HTS operation at Surrey Docks (CM June 22) will involve the transfer of container work from Charlton, and will be run by, South London Inland Clearance.
