[3033] (Haulage).—The light two-wheeled trailers, as used to convey aeroplanes, should have other applications commercially. You can get quotations from the Lacre Motor Car Co. Ltd., 78, York Road, N., E. and H. Hora, Ltd., Peckham Road, S.E., or B. N: Taylor, 4, Rosemont Road, Finchley Road, N.W. '

Cars for Directors and Officials. • [3034] (Petrol Tax).—The law requires petrol for the cars of directors and officials to be petrol on which the full duty has been paid, unless the passenger vehicles in which the directors and officials travel are not liable for, and do not pay, ordinary motorcar licences. Payment or non-payment of annual licences is the test of exemption from classification as private motorcars.

They should be signed by the vendor when any purchase is made, as a certificate that the petrol has paid full duty. They serve as the necessary first document upon which to found the claims for refunds of 3d. per gallon.

Adhesion in Relation to Width of Tire.

[3038] (Glaagarsv):.ho laws of friction are as you state them when the surfaces are not yielding surfaces. A -narrow tire, when used on macadamized roads, tends to penetrate the surface to a certain depth, however small. If the intensity of pressure per unit is materially reduced, by using a larger tire, the penetration factor is lessened, and that factor of course has a bearing upon sideslip, although not upon what we may term rotational adhesion.

Our Opinion on Other People's Costs.

[3039] (poventry).—We have perused with interest your register for the Guy 30-cwt. lorry, and we are returning it to you. The petrol consumption is satisfactory, and your outgoingsafor oil and grease are the same providedoyou are givingsufficient attention to

i

lubrication, and your driver s screwing down the various grease caps with the frenuency which is recommended by the makers respectively. It is, of course, impossible to express any really useful opinion on other points, seeing that. the data, only toyer six months, and that practically. no items have yet been. introduced in.respect of weirs or tires. Perhaps you will submit the figures to us at, the end of the year, -together with a summary under each heading, so that we may see the totals at a glance. Quick Delivery of Chassis for 14•-seated Motorbuses.

We recommend you to write to the Metropolitan Water Board for the licences which you require. Address the Chief Engineer, M.W.B., Savoy Court, W.C.

Ton-mile Calculations.

(3042] (Halifax).—It is impossible to calculate tonmileage from figures of total weight conveyed per week and total distance travelled per week, unless an average load can be safely adopted for the loaded portion of the running. If you know the mean load for the portion of the total running that is run under load, you can multiply that mean load by the mileage rim under load, and so obtain the approximate net ton-mileage. It is only possible to get the exact tonmileage by multiplying the actual load per trip by the actual mileage per trip, thereafter adding the products of the multiplications together. If, in your ease, the average load is 3 tons 24 cwt., which appears to us to be correct, and the total loaded running is 51 miles per week, the net ton-miles are 159.4.

Axle-weights for Trailers.

[3043] (Manchester.—The axle-weight of, any axle of a trailer must not exceed four tons, if it is to comply with the requirements of the Heavy Motor Car Order. Each axle must carry the load appropriate to the diameter of the wheels on it, grid the widths of the tires on those wheels. If the weight of the trailer is one ton or less when unladen, no wheel and tire dimensions are enforced, although the requirements of the Heavy Motor Car Order, in respect of brakes,' do apply. The unladen weight of the trailer must be painted on the off side, but not the axle-weights, when it is of the foregoing maximum weight. You do riot state the unladen weights of your trailers, but we will assume that each is in excess of one ton. We observe that the tires on all the wheels are 3 ins, in width or more, and you therefore comply with the minimum, which is laid down as 3 ins, for a trailer which Weighs more than one ton unladen. Particular cases which Taut refer to us, as under, allow of the respective axle-weights which we have added —No, 1, front wheels 2 ft. 4 ins. and back wheels 3 ft. 2 ins., all 3 in. tires, front axle-weight 1 ton 17 cwt., back axle-weight 2 tons 5 cwt. 2 qrs. ; No. 2, front wheels 3 ft., back wheels 3 ft. 4 ins., all

tires front axle-weight 2 tons. 12;1 cwt., back 'axle-weight 2 tons 14 -cwt. 3 qrs. ; No. 3, 2 ft. 8 ins., back wheels 3 ft. 2 ins. all

weight 2 tons 1 cwt., b axle-weiglit 2 tons 5 cwt. ; Nos. 4 and 5, front wheels 2 ft. 8 ins., back wheels ft. 2 ins., all tires 41 ins., front axle-weight 3 tons 1 ewt. 2 qrs., back axle-weight 3 tons 9 cwt. We have already asked the Secretary of the Manchester, Liverpool and Counties C.M.U.A. to give you the desired particulars of membership.
