Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Wincanton has stunned its workforce by axing its Vilton Keynes depot, citing falling volumes. Jennifer Ball reports.

THE TRANSPORT & General Workers Union has reacted with shock and anger to logistics firm Wincanton's decision to close its Milton Keynes depot with the loss of over 350 jobs.

Wincanton blames changes in the way its customers run their transport operations, particularly the move to using more of their own transport through factory gate pricing, for falling volumes from the site.

The 352 job losses are mainly among drivers and warehouse staff.

The Wiltshire-based plc says it will rationalise its chilled goods operations into two sites at Trafford Park and Gloucester.

Graham McFaul, Wincanton's head of UK operations, says: "We have been reviewing our operations at Milton Keynes for sometime now in light of pressures and changes in the market. We regret having to take this decision and we will be making every effort to help our colleagues at Milton Keynes to find alternative employment." The T&G has reacted angrily to the move: "Our members have worked extremely hard to ensure that Wincanton's Milton Keynes operation was a successful one," says Marion Maher,T&G regional industrial organiser. "They are obviously shocked to discover that their hard work will not be rewarded with a secure future. "The union's priority now is to support our members during this time of uncertainty and to help them plan for a more stable future," she adds.
