THANK YOU for your letter referring to the "Pushing 50" campaign and calling for lifting of the speed limits for commercial vehicles on suitable de-restricted A roads.

The Road Safety Division of the Department for Transport (DfT) has undertaken a review of the 1993 Department for Transport and the Welsh Office circular for speed limits. Consulta tion in England began on 22 November.Wc are also preparing documentation for setting speed limits in Wales; this will be ready for consultation in the near future.

This review includes taking advice from government officials inWales,Scotland and Northern Ireland. the Association of Police Officers, County Surveyors Society (representing local authorities), selected local authorities, the University College of London, consultants and other key personnel. The intention is to establish a new set of guidelines, technical advice leaflets and a road safety/accident investigation manual.

In the next few weeks my officials will finalise versions of the documents for use in Wales. We shall be asking for the views of interested parties throughout Wales. We shall involve Commercial Motor in this consultation and we look forward to receiving any comments that you have.
