ig A lorry driver was fined £180 after claiming he crashed into a railway bridge because he thought his container was a foot lower than it was.

The impact of the collision involving a Benton Brothers (Transport) vehicle moved the bridge by 225mm and buckled the track, according to British Transport Police.

But Bob Sheldon, transport manager of the company based in Boston, Lincolnshire, says no compensation claim has been received: "I have not heard anything from anybody; no news is good news."

Driver Dale Bembridge had four penalty points on his licence and was ordered to pay £40 costs plus the fine after pleading guilty to careless driving at Llandrindod Wells Magistrates Court. The accident took place on the 8470 near Buith Wells in September.

The court heard that Bembridge thought

the Lys Line container was only 131t Bin high because of a colour-coding system which identified its size. He also thought he could negotiate the bridge after seeing a lorry of similar size go through.
