Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IS The row between the Transport & General Workers Union and the United Road Transport Union over Ford drivers is likely to be dealt with by a Trades Union Congress disputes committee.

URTU general-secretary David Higginbottom says the two-month rift between the main drivers' unions appears to be heading towards arbitration by a specially convened TUC committee—both unions would be bound by this committee's ruling. Last week a meeting was scheduled to be held between Higginbottom, TGWU generalsecretary Bill Morris, and TUC general-secretary John Monks. No further meetings have been planned.

The row centres on URTU's recruitment of nearly 300 former TGWU members from Ford's truck fleet operation at Dagenham. The TGWU accused URTU of "compromising with racism": URTU denies the charge and says it is legally obliged to take on the Ford workers if they wish it.

E Last month seven men aided by the TGWU accused Ford management at an industrial tribunal of excluding ethnic minorities from its truck fleet. The case was settled privately.
