• Ten years after throwing away their CB radios in favour of mobile telephones, American truckers are returning to CB because it is a lot cheaper. CB sales are up almost 70% in some areas, and are set to continue to rise this year. Once drivers have bought CB equipment they no longer face the expensive air time and call charges that go with mobile phones—all their calls are effectively free. Using illegal amplifiers or sidebands, US drivers can speak to colleagues anywhere in America. General Motors has even started °tiering CB rigs as optional extras in its new cars.
