Although Many Undertakings are to Introduce 2d. Minimum Single Fare, Northern General is to Keep Id. Unit for Short Stages

PARTIAL approval has been given by the Northern Licensing Authority to the proposals to increase charges put forward by the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., and its associated concerns. The Authority has decided that the Id. fare shall be retained for journeys up to 7/10 mile, and that the LW. and 2d. fares shall remain unchanged. Ordinary, return, children's and workmen's fares are to go up and there will now be new 12-journey tickets.

Giving decision, the Licensing Authority said that the concerns had reached the stage where it was impossible to make further economies.

Stating that the suggestions made by objectors produced no practical alternative to the proposals put forward by the applicant, the Western Licensing Authority last week granted Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., permission to introduce new charges from March 1. Thereafter, the minimum adult single fare will be 2d. and, the workmen's minimum fare 5d. Odd id. units will disappear from the fare tab!es.

Another £.119,500a Year

Plymouth Corporation is to introduce new charges next Sunday. Increases estimated to augment revenue by £119.500 a year have been authorized by the Western Licensing Authority. Here, too, the minimum fare becomes 2d. and remaining id. units in fares will be removed. In the outer section of the joint operational area fare stages will be modified to a uniform length of 0.65d. mile, thus producing reductions in some cases.

East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., has received only partial approval for its plan to increase charges. All single fares up to and including 3d. will cost id. more, return tickets from 2d. to 41d, will go up by id., and 5d.-6d, return fares will cost ld. more. Contract rates will rise by 124 per cent. The concern had proposed to advance single, return and workmen's fares by 15 per cent, and contract tickets by 25 per cent.

Seven companies operating in County Durham have been granted increased charges. Giving decision, the Northern Licensing Authority declared that, far from making fortunes, bus operators were running at a serious loss. The increases approved include the addition of Id. to single fares from 21d. to 4d., and of Id. to fares over 5d. On return fares up to Is., the increase will be Id. and thereafter 2d.

The operators concerned are Alton Bros. (Trimdon), Ltd., Messrs. W. Duffield, Messrs. Wilkinson Motor Services, Messrs. A. Roucroft, J. J. Baker, Ltd., Gillet Bros. (Motor Services), Ltd., and Trimdon Motor Services, Ltd.

Decision was reserved after the hearing before the North Western Licensing Authority of the application of the Staly bridge, Hyde, Mossley and Dukinfield Joint Transport Board for higher charges. It was stated that on existing rates, a loss of 119,305 would he incurred next year. Advances hitherto granted augmented revenue by 197,932 a year, half of the true increased cost of operation.

S.H.M.D. Proposals The Board proposed to reorganize stages for fares over 4d., to eliminate odd id. units except in the lid. and 21d. fares, and to abolish schoolchildren's weekly privilege tickets.

Seventy-six services are affected by the proposal of Highland Omnibuses, Ltd., Inverness, to vary fares.

Chesterfield Corporation has applied for permission to modify fare tables to provide for the establishment of a 2d. minimum adult single fare, and for revised children's rates. The application affects 64 services. East Midland Motor Services, Ltd., has applied for permission to introduce identical revision on 42 routes in the area. Birkenhead Corporation and its joint operators have lodged an application for permission to modify single fares by introducing a mileage scale based on a stage length of 0.75 mile. The minimum fare proposed is lid. for one stage, the structure thereafter providing for a journey up to 1 mile for 2d., up to 1.75 miles for 21d., and so on up to a maximum of 94-11 miles for 10d.

Revised single concession fares, bus and boat, and children's rates are also suggested, together with the withdrawal of certain cheap day return tickets. The application covers 50 routes.

Bury Corporation, Ramsbot torn Urban District Council and joint operators have applied for variations affecting 42 services. In this case it is suggested that the ordinary single fare should be based on !id. for the first i mile, with 1d. for each additional mile. The abolition of workpeople's fares and their replacement by cheap day-return tickets is also suggested.

Hanson's Workmen's Fares

Hanson's Buses, Ltd., Huddersfield, proposes to withdraw workmen's fares on 12 routes, consequent upon the application of Huddersfield Corporation to this effect.

Details have now been released of the application of Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., and its associated concerns, for permission to advance charges. The applicants propose to add id. to lid., 2id., 31d., 41d. and 51d. fares and to advance seasonticket rates by 5 per cent., to meet the increase in operating costs following the award of higher wages in September last year.

Strong opposition is expected to Wolverhampton Corporation's plan to raise the minimum adult single fare from lid. to 2d., and the minimum workmen's return from 3d. to 4d. The application will be heard next Thursday. The undertaking also proposes to remove odd id. units from fare tables and to revise return rates. If granted, the new charges will augment revenue by 168,000 a year.
