DISTRIBUTION CENTRES at ports will become more important over the next few years as hauliers try to save money and increase efficiency, a conference heard last week. More than 100 logistics specialists attended the debate, held at Teesport. which examined the development of -porteentric logistics" in the UK, Paul Stiller, executive chairman of the Stiller transport group, said factors such as lower costs and shorter lead times were encouraging more distribution operations to be based at ports.
Andrew Spence, commercial director of Bulmers specialist container haulage, said that to make port logistics work at their best, it was important to have a port with few industrial relations issues, allyear-round sailing weather, and good access by road and rail.
PD Ports, the operator of Teesport, said it is committed to a £300m development of its container port planning permission has already been granted by two local authorities involved.
