Writer Will Shiers' pursuit of abandoned

trucks and cars throughout America has led to close encounters with knife-wielding owners and venomous snakes.

0 ver the past decade I have extensively travelled the highways and byways that crisscross rural America, covering more than 50,000 miles in my search for abandoned cars and trucks. In the mid! 990s this was a relatively easy task, with an abundance of ancient vehicles sitting in gardens, barns, fields, deserts and junkyards. But the ever-increasing price of scrap metal and growing environmental pressures have resulted in the loss of millions of old vehicles to the crusher.

However, as I discovered this summer on a trip through Colorado, Kansas,Nebraska, the Dakotas and Montana, there are still a few forgotten treasures to be found if you look hard enough. •
