MAYBE IT'S TI ME for operators to issue their drivers with Santa suits because more than half the British public think professional drivers, more than anyone else, make Christmas happen, according to a recent survey HGV and van drivers were top of the Christmas list for 54% of the British public, followed by 22% who acknowledged the role of farmers and 15% who put the hospitality industry first for praise during the festive season.

The survey, which asked 1,000 respondents which group of workers they felt contributed most to making the Christmas festivities possible, was carried out on behalf of the recruitment and training agency Clearstone.

'The results suggest the public is more appreciative of trans port's crucial role than the road transport industry itself realises.

Among the huge range of goods which L:K drivers will deliver during this pre-Christmas rush are: 120.000 tonnes of potatoes, 1,200 tonnes of parsnips, 1,600 tonnes of chestnuts, 16 million packets of stuffing, 11 million Christmas cakes, 40,000 tonnes of Christmas citrus fruits, 7.5 million carrots... and 19,000 tonnes of turkey.
