Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

As Volvo launches its first EGR Euro-4 product in Europe, Cohn Barnett sees how it differs from its SCR sibling.

WITH VOLVO'S mainstream product range firmly committed to the AdBlue SCR approach to Euro-4 emissions, it might seem surprising that the manufacturer should add an EGR option to the line-up. But having had to develop FOR technology for the North American and Japanese markets, the Swedes realised it was a relatively easy task to adapt it for the small but significant number of European operators that have their own reasons for wanting the 'add nothing' system.

Hence the arrival of the Euro-4 D13B EGR engine, with the same six-cylinder 12.8-litre layout as its SCR cousin. Beyond the obvious plumbing differences between the two systems, the other significant change is an improved variablegeometry turbocharger. There is also the option of a new VEB7 engine brake, giving 340kW of retardation compared with the standard engine brake's 181kW, and an engine-driven PTO. The EGR engine is available at nominal ratings of 360, 400 and 440hp in the FM, and 400, 440 and 500hp in the FH. Torque outputs for the four ratings are 1,800,2,000, 2,200 and 2,400Nm respectively. Ticking the EGR box will add £600 to your bill.

Volvo readily admits the EGR system carries a small fuel penalty — but some, such as daily rental companies, will see this as irrelevant, while others will be prepared to pay a bit more for the convenience. A weight saving of around 80kg, combined with the 75kg saving with the 1-Shift automated manual transmission, makes a tempting proposition to weight-conscious operators such as tippermen. Some 40% of Volvo tippers are now bought with I-Shift. The ability to fit a vertical exhaust easily is another attraction for off-roaders. challenging Sun Rising Hill. Sadly, 400 horses and a top selfchanging gearbox mean it's now no more of a challenge than Shap. Although the EGR's torque curve climbs more steeply to its peak than the SCR's, it reaches it at 1,000rpm. 100rprn sooner. There's no real noticeable difference between the two engines, other than a slightly harsher feel to the FOR.
