• Drivers in Spain found themselves stranded last weekend as snow storms swept across the north of the country Firemen and troops battled through deep drifts to rescue hundreds of motorists who were trapped in cars in north-east Spain on Saturday50 HGV drivers spent Saturday night sheltering in a road tunnel near Barcelona.
Some 200 motorists were still trapped in their oars on the N11 and All highways on Sunday morn ing. About 30 major roads were blocked, isolating the Catalonia region from the rest of Spain.
On Monday the congestion ran along the Mediterranean side of Spain, moving southwards through Girona, Barcelona, Lleida, Tarragona and Zaragoza. Brian Gardener, who drives for Linosbased Denby Transport, says: `At the weekend the snow here was very serious, blocking the roads system. I was held for five-and-a-half hours while the authorities tried to clear the roads."
