• After what has sometimes '5earned like an endless wait, the mpounding of unlicensed trucks Nil finally begin on 4 January 2002. As reported in last week's CM, Transport Minister John pellar signed the documentaion on 14 December empowerng the Vehicle Inspectorate to 5eize trucks caught running Nithout an Operator's Licence.

Although the VI is unlikeiy to inearth many cowboys running ompietely outside the 0-licensng system, the checks are likely to find some of the operators Nho run more vehicles than they lave specified on their licences.

It will be interesting to see if the Traffic Area Offices receive a flood of applications from hauliers wishing to add vehicles to licences in the new year.

Impounding's arrival ends an almost decade-long campaign by the Road Haulage and Freight Transport Associations and Commerciaf Motor. Speller will unveil the measure himself at a roadside check in the Midlands and CMwill be there to see it.
