Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

diesel-engined lorries is partially blocked by deposits of rust. The engine tends to overheat and occasionally runs erratically under high load. I have washed the system out with tap water but there is no improvement. A colleague has suggested that I use an acid solution to clean out the system. What do you recommend?

A You are advised to adopt the following

procedure: After running the engine until the water has reached its normal operating temperature, drain the water from the radiator and put in an amount of paraffin equal to one-tenth the volume of water required to fill the radiator. Then add a solution of washing soda and water in the ratio of +lb of soda to a gallon of water. Run the engine for 20/30min, drain and wash out with water.

If this cleansing process is not effective, an acid solution could be used containing hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde, but this is a job for a specialist or a mechanic who has had experience of applying the method. The acid may attack the radiator metals if treatment exceeds a critical time. It is essential that the job be done expertly.
