Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

life expired. In view of our increased export trade we intend to purchase equipment which will work satisfactorily inside containers should the need arise. Can you advise on the relative merits of fork-lift and pallet trucks for this type of work?

A Whereas with a suitable fork-lift truck r' one can stack pallets two-high inside a container, this is not possible with an ordinary

pallet truck. However, a low fork-lift mast will be essential bearing in mind that the interior height of an ISO container is rarely over 7ft 4in, and we suggest you look for a machine which gives a free lift of over 5ft within a lowered mast height of approximately 6ft Sin.

A side-shift attachment will be necessary to ensure that pallets may be positioned directly against the container walls. As the fitting of such an attachment will lower the truck's effective capacity, it is advisable that 3,0001b machines again be considered in order to give adequate margins in handling 1-ton pallet loads.

Whereas a fork-lift truck of 3,000lb capacity should present no problems as regards container floor loadings. particularly when pneumatic tyres are fitted, one must appreciate that a pallet truck has small wheels. usually in the region of 3in. diameter, 3in. width, made of steel or nylon. As a pallet load approaching 2 tons will be required with a pallet truck to make an effective container payload, such small wheels will probably produce floor loadings in excess of rated specifications.

You do not state what type of commodity will be handled. However, in all cases an electric or I.p.g. powered machine would be preferable in order to combat the fume problem when working within the confined space of a container.
