Coach-Air Bid

THE North Western Traffic Commissioners on Monday considered an application by Happiway Tours (Manchester) Ltd. to vary their excursion and tours licences, originating from East Street, Manchester. Mr. J. Cossey, for the applicants, said that they wished to amend certain Continental tours so that passengers could undertake part of their journey by air instead of by sea, thus saving time. On five specified tours, the maximum number of vehicles to be operated at any time on the day of departure and the day of return should be two. Alternatively, when not more than: two of the specified tours were operated, five vehicles might be operated at any one time on each tour; there would not be more than 10 vehicle departures in any one w8ek. There had been certain difficulties in their coach-air tours operation and xhey wanted to put these right, he said. Certain inclusive charges of some tours would be increased. Where tours were changed from sea to air the route would be via Southend instead of Dover, Mr. H. C. Evans, manager of Happiway, said that their tours involving a sea crossing to the Continent had not proved 'very popular because of the long journey which had to be undertaken. They had introduced coach-air tours and these had to be geared to the capacity of the aircraft which were used.

The application was opposed by Florence Motors Ltd., Smiths Tours (Wigan) Ltd. and Wallace Arnold Tours Ltd.

The application was adjourned.
