BIRMINGHAM Corporation cannot allow its transport undertaking to fall more into "the red ", Mr. 3. P. Graham, Q.C., told the West Midland Traffic Commissioners on Monday. He was presenting the Corporation's application for a new fares scale, planned to produce extra revenue of £1m. a year. The Commissioners reserved their decision.

If granted, the proposed new fares will come into operation on January 26, and passengers will pay up to 2d. more on ordinary fares. The application was

made for much the same reason that applied to previous increases—rising costs of equipment and wage awards. "The total estimated expenditure up to March, 1964, is £9,373,000. If nothing is done about it, income is going to amount to about £8,973,000. That means there will be an estimated deficit of about £400,000 with an accumulated deficit of £471,642 to carry forward ", Mr. Graham told the Commissioners.
