FEARS HAVE BEEN raised over the future of a truckstop off the M74, south of Glasgow, following an application by supermarket giant Tesco to build a new superstore on the site.

Tesco has bought the Europa Truck Stop at Lesmahagow and submitted an application to South Lanarkshire Council to build a 25,000f12 store, which will include a petrol station and car park The facility currently has parking space for 140 trucks, as well as 24-houra-day security, sleeping facilities, shower and wash rooms, and a licensed bar.

A Tesco spokesman says the firm hopes the application can be heard by the council's planning committee before the end of this year. Construction work would take eight to nine months.

Graham Eardley, managing director at Earclley International, which runs the truckstop just off Junction 19 of the M74 says: From our point of view, we would expect to pick up new business if the Europa site closed, although it would be sad if that happened. There is still an urgent need for truck parking facilities nearer Glasgow we are about an hourand-a-quarter away from it"

Road Haulage Association director for Scotland Phil Flanders adds: 'This is a bit of a worry, we are concerned that another important facility for drivers might be lost."
