HGV overtaking ban on 1 k M42 goes permanent

By Re,ger Brown

THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY (HA) has made the daytime overtaking ban for HGVs on a three-mile stretch of the northbound M42 near Tamworth permanent.

It says the decision follows a "successful 18-month trial': during which trucks of 7.5 tonnes and greater could use only the inside lane of the two-lane section from Junctions 10 and 11 between 7am and 7pm. Around 79,000 vehicles a day use this part of the motorway nearly a quarter are HGVs. The HA says that during the trial period. HGV journey times "remained unchanged in the morning peak and improved at other times": A similar truck overtaking ban became permanent on two stretches of the A14 in Northamptonshire in October 2008.

Speaking for the Road Haulage Association (RHA), Kate Gibbs says the RHA is disappointed with the M42 decision. She said: "It could become a nightmare for firms wanting to plan journeys and result in even more parts of the country introducing these unnecessary schemes" Kevin Buchanan, managing director at Birmingham-based pallet network Palletline, is concerned the government might not be looking at the road network as a whole. He said: "It would he nice to think there was some kind of joined-up thinking from the government on this issue."
