growth in the use of lightweight refrigerated vehicles to supply internet food shoppers has gone largely unnoticed.
For example, Tesco has recently built home shopping fulfilment centres for chilled, ambient and frozen split compartment deliveries because it is easier to work vans from dedicated distribution points than local retail stores.
Vans can be double-shifted for better vehicle utilisation and wider delivery windows, and drivers now deliver to the fridge door to maintain the integrity of the cold chain. Tomlinson thinks this sector has been growing so fast that the emphasis for operators has been in keeping up with customer demand. The next stage will see more attention paid to electric and other low-environmental-impact vehicles.
