• The owner of a 61-year-old Lancashire container haulage firm is closing its doors at the end of August blaming low rates and the price of diesel. Geoff Barker of Barkers & Son of Burscough, Lancs, says he had hoped to pass the running of his firm over to his son, but he was killed in a ski-jog accident earlier this year. Barker says that although the fatality was the main impetus behind the decision to close, low rates combined with escalating costs were also significant factors. "I think a lot of hauliers around Lancashire may walk away from the industry very soon," Barker says. "Judging by conversations I have had, the rise in diesel duty is causing a lot of concern."

The firm's seven drivers have found new employment.
