A GLASGOW mechanic who saved a vehicle from being written-off when it was threatened by a collapsing wall, has become the fourth person to win the National Freight Corporation's meritorious service award.

He is Dhain Singh Devsi, 34, who works at the Scottish Road Services Townsend Street Branch.

The action which earned him the award, a silver salver and a sum of money, was performed earlier this year when a dividing wall collapsed at the branch. No one was injured and thanks to Mr Devsi no vehicle was damaged.

It was noticed that the wall was about the come down but the branch manager felt that he could not instruct any of the staff to remove a vehicle directly under it because of the danger.

But Mr Devsi went in to the workshop, started the vehicle and reversed it out, only minutes before the wall collapsed. A spokesman for NFC said that but for his action the vehicle, worth £2,250, would have been a write-off.
