THE Northern Licensing Authority commented last week on a farmer's use of a C licence vehicle. Mr. R. Davidson, of Beck Brow, wished to place his C licence lorry on a B licence. He was strongly supported, but British Road Services contended that facilities were already adequate.
The Authority observed that the applicant's customers were mainly farmers in his locality. Whilst he (the Licensing Authority) had previously stated that each case had to be considered on its merits, another Authority had suggested five miles as a reasonable definition of the radius of the area within which farmers could be served, "It seems that the applicant could, perhaps, use that C licence vehicle to meet the requirements of those who gave evidence," said the Authority. "I am reluctant, however, to encourage the use of this section of the 1933 Act in the case of a person who holds a haulier's licence and is engaged as a haulier in that class of work."
A B licence to cover work for farmers within seven miles was granted.
