Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

F' direct purchases of transport units are now coming to light, but vehicles continue to change hands, many of them a number of times. This week, assignments are reported from

six areas.

NORTHERN AREA Seven more lorries have been acquired by McPhees (Newcastle), Ltd., Ford Street Garage, City Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. They have an unladen weight of 481 tons. J. W. Hodgson (Transport), Ltd., 209 Blackwell Road, Carlisle, have also taken over another, seven lorries (261. tons). They were transferred by Messrs. S. W. Hodgson Transport, of the same address.

Mr. E. Waters, 84 St. Mary's Avenue, Monkseaton, has bought another two lorries (5 tons 13 cwt.). He has transferred these and two others, one (21 tons) to Mr. F. f1,. Harrison, Batts Garage, Frosterley, Bishop Auckland; oat (17 cwt.) to F. and F. Robinson (Stockton-on-Tees), Ltd., Elm Street, Stockton-on-Tees; one (3 tons 4 cwt.) to John Hodge (Hauliers), Ltd., Kirk Yetholm; and one (2 tons 9 cwt.) to Messrs. Lamont and Warren, cio Milburn Motors, Ltd., Kingston, Carlisle.

The Northern Licensing Authority has also authorized the transfer of a lorry (2 tons 19 cwt.) to Messrs. Bell and Young, Station Garage, St. Helens, Bishop Auckland, by Messrs. B. M. English and Son, Middle House, East Rainton; one (9 tons 4 cwt.) to Econofreight Transport, Ltd., Economac House, Dunstall Road, Wolverhampton, by J. R. Hett (Transport), Ltd., 15 South Parade, Croft Spa, Darlington; one (6 tons 14 cwt.) to Mr. F. P. Inman, North Lonsdale Road Garage, Ulverston, by Mr. J. W. Ratcliffe, Low Bank Road Garage, Ashton-in-Makerfield; one (2 tons 16 cwt.) to Mrs. C. McKenna, Weatherley Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, by Quelch Carriers, Ltd., 28 The Side, Newcastle upon Tyne; a lorry (6 tons) and a trailer to Caledon Distributors, Ltd., 138 High Street, Falkirk, by Mr. M. Regan, 43a Settle Street, Stepney, London; three articulated tractors (9 tons 17 cwt.) and three trailers to Wm. Bruriskill and Son (Transport), Ltd., Central Garage, George Street, Bishop Auckland, by Lintzgarth Transport Co., Ltd., Parkend. Ormesby, Middlesbrough; two articulated tractors (5 tons 7 cwt.) and two trailers to Goddards of Benwell, Ltd., Sandhills, Newburn-on-Tyne, by Central Garage (Bathgate), Ltd., George Place, Bathgate; and an articulated tractor (4 tons 3 cwt.) and a trailer to Irvine Valley Coaches, Ltd., Darvel, Ayrshire, by Syd Abrams. Ltd., Waterloo Road, Manchester, S.

Tees-side Carriers, Ltd., Portrack Garage, Church Road, Stockton-on-Tees. have taken over four lorries (22 tons 16 cwt.), and four trailers from Hacketts Haulage, Ltd., 229 Cross Lane, Salford, 5, and a lorry (5 tons 7 cwt.) from Mr. R. Armstrong, 85 Newgatc Street, Newcastle upon Tyne.

NORTH-WEST More vehicles have been bought and assigned by Woodcocks Transport (Chorley), Ltd., Park Road Garage, Heskin. Chorley.

Of eight vehicles, including an articulated outfit, and three trailers (481 tons), taken over from Mr. J. Ball, Stacey Road, Mansfield, one (7+ tons) has been transferred to Mr. J. Brindley, The Close, Sharnford. Hinckley. One (3 tons) of two lorries (6 tons) transferred by Hacketts Haulage, Ltd., 229 Cross Lane, Salford, 5, has been re-assigned to Mr. E. J. Massey, 225 Chester Road. Grappenhall, Warrington, who has also had another lorry weighing three tons unladen made over to him by Woodcocks Transport An articulated outfit (4 tons) has also been bought by Woodcocks Transport 1336 from Tattersalls Haulage, Ltd. 25 Beverley Road, Manchester, 15. Other transfers made by Woodcocks Transport are: a lorry (3 tons) to Mr. M. Regan, 30 Sutton Road, Heaton Norris, Stockport ; one (51 Ions) to Mr. J. Parry, in the West Midland Traffic Area; and one (5 tons) to Little Strickland Trading Co., Ltd., near Penrith, Cumberland, Hacketts Haulage have sold a lorry (51 tons) based at Longton, Preston, to the North East Transport Co. (Aberdeen), Ltd. North Esplanade East, Aberdeen. F. Ankers, Roving Bridge, Whixall, Salop, has taken over a lorry. (24 tons) from Mr. L. Gleave, Holly Bank, Audlem, near Crewe. Mr. Glcave has had two lorries (4-1 tons) transferred to him by Mr. J. Brindley.

Other assignments authorized by the North Western Licensing Authority are: a lorry (3 tons) to Mr. G. Cooper, 74 Ramage Lane, -Levenshulme, Manchester, by Messrs. Bell Haulage, '1 Tod Street, Manchester; one (3+ tons) to Mr. W. Davies, Lakcfield House, Caergwrle, Flints, by Mr. A. Pritchard, 2 Derwen Villas, Wrexham Street; Mold ; one (41 tons) to Messrs. A. Edwards and Son, Hough Garage, Hough, near Crewe, by Mr. A. Faulkner, Audlem Road, Batherton, near l'slantwich; one (5+ tons) to Mr. R. Litherland, 64 Smethurst Lane, Bolton, by J. Bradley (Accrington), Ltd., Accrington,; two (6 tons) to Mr. N. Beech, Hope Street, Hanley, by Harris Road Services, Ltd., Lostock Gralam ; one (3 tons) to Mr. H. Pheasey, Hillmorton, Ashford-inthe-Water, by Postles Transport Co., Ltd., Northwich; and one (71 tons) to Houldsworth Motors, Ltd., Porlock, Chester Road, Woodford, Cheshire, by Prince Transport (Warrington), Ltd., 44 Arpley Street, Warrington. Houldsworth Motors have re-assigned their purchase to Mr. A. R. lbbotson, 164 Worksop Road, Swallownest, near Sheffield.

WEST MIDLANDS Direct purchases have been made by Mr. G. Brough, 53 Oak Road, Manchester, 8, of live lorries (14+ tons); Mr. F. G. Howson, 7 Elrnfield Street, Manchester, 8, two (51 tons); and Mr. R. Lovatt, 4 Edgehill Road, Royton, four (12 tons). Longton Transport, Ltd., King Street, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, have taken over another five lorries. Three of these (171 tons) came from Mr. J. M. Trevor, West Stella, Granville Avenue, Newport, Salop, and the others (8 tons) from Mr. G. Richardson, 100 Dudley Road East, Oldbury. Mr. Richardson has also transferred a lorry (31 tons) to Westland Transport, Ltd., 51 Mason Street, West Bromwich.

Mr. Trevor has, in turn, had a lorry (4 tons) made over to him by J. G. Perkins and Co., Buxton.

Four more lorries have been bought by Mr. N. Beech, Hope Street, Hanky. Two of them (6 tons) were assigned by Harris' Road Services, Ltd., Lostock Gralam; and one (2+ tons) by Mr. J. Frost, and one (71 tons) by Messrs, James Frost Transport, both of James• Street Garage. Wolstanton, Stoke-on-Trent.

The West Midland Licensing Authority has also authorized the transfer of a lorry (8+ tons) to F. W. T. Ross, Ltd., Monmouth, by Messrs. C. Blake and Son, Loxley, Warwick..

SOUTH WALES G. Morris and Sons, Ltd., Napier Garage, Pontyberem, have acquired a lorry (71 tons) from Messrs. Morris and Sons, of the same address.

Trevor G. Phillips, Ltd., Cadoxtoo Garage, Cadoxton, Neath, have taken over a lorry (71 tons) from Valley Carriers, Ltd., Grove Terrace, Penarth.

WESTERN AREA A. D. Forsey (Transport), Ltd., Ricketts Lane Works, Work, have taken over another lorry (3 tons 14 cwt.). Another lorry bought by S. Ball and Son (Transport), Ltd., West End Garage, Chipping Sodbury, has been transferred. Weighing 4 tons 4 cwt. unladen, it. has gone to Mr. W. H. ifuband, Eyrcs Farm, Heddington.

Messrs. C. C. Chincry, The Russets, East Grafton, have taken over a lorry (2 tons 19 cwt.) from Western Transport, Ltd., Feeder Road, Bristol.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES Two lorries (5 tons 7 cwt.) and two trailers have been acquired boy Joseph Huxley and Sons, Ltd., Bell Yard, Church Street, Staines.

Messrs. F. and E. Felgate, 12 Hainault Road, Chadwell Heath, Essex, have also purchased two lorries (6 tons 4 cwt,). Five lorries (18 tons 12 cwt.) and a

trailer, based at Purfleet, have been transferied to Woodcocks Transport (Chorley). Ltd., Park Road Garage, Heskin, near (Thorley, by Hacketts Haulage, Ltd., 229 Cross Lane, Salford, 5. One of the lorries (3 tons) has now been sold to Mr. G. J. Alien, 343 Washway Road, Sale, Cheshire, and another (44 tons) to Mr. J. J. Potts, Warrington. Woodcocks Transport have also made over a lorry (3+ tons) to Mr. '1. W. Hodge, 52 Florence Road, London, S.F.I4, who, in turn, has transferred one
