Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I N connection with the erection of the 'pylons and general maintenance work concerned with the grid system, the Central Electricity Authority has put into service a special van based on an Austin 3-ton chassis powered by a B.M.C. 3.4-titre oil engine.

The body, which is divided into two sections, can accommodate eight linesmen in the forward part, which has a bench seat on each side. Access to this section is gained by a door on the near side, just behind the cab, and facing this door, on the off side, is a Calor-gas cooking stove. Locker space is provided under each bench seat and there is a cupboard beneath the cooking stove.

The rear section of the body is used for carrying equipment and as a workshop. The partition between the sections is provided with sliding windows. Ladders are carried in cradles on the roof, which has a catwalk.

To reach the roof there is a special ladder, which is stowed in the rear section and is located inside a frame on the tailboard. This frame also acts as a pivotal point for a metal step which, wffbn let down, simplifies the ascent of the roof ladder.

At the front of the vehicle there is an 8-ton winch driven from a power take-off on the gearbox. For use with the winch a land-anchor is carried. Other special equipment includes wheel sprags for use off the road. To the same end, the rear wheels are equipped with Goodyear Sure Grip tyres.

Interior appointments include twoway radio, and a heater in the cab and in the main section. Two extractor ventilators are fitted in the roof. Although the cab is of the Austin standard type, the roof and rear have been modified to conform to requirements and the lines of the body.

Another modification is removal of the batteries to the near side, whilst two lockers have been built at valance level, also on the near side.

This vehicle, which is one of three of a similar type on order, was supplied by King and Taylor, Ltd., The Wharf, Godalming, Surrey, who also built the body. It has an ash frame with oak cross-bearers and light-alloy panels.
