T H E North Western Licensing Authociity on Monday authorized Bolton Transport Department to increase its minimum fare from 4cl. to 2d. Permission to make a sirnilar increase has also been 'granted to the municipal undertakings of Nottingham and West Bridgford by the East Midland Licensing Authority.

The Bolton proposals, which are expected to bring in additional revenue of £40,500 a year, do not affect the existing 2d., 21d. and '3d. rates.

It was stated that a successful application to abolish workers' fares in October last year was expected to produce a surplus of £38,000 at the end of 1956-57. Pay awards to staff had, however', absorbed most of that sum, so that if the fares remained unchanged the surplus -would be only £4,425 for the current year and £5,100 for 1957-58.

Reserves had fallen from £320,000 in 1945 to £7,300 last year, and although they now stood at £35,000, that figure was considered small in the light of the turnover of the undertaking.

Mr. A. A. Jackson, Bolton's general manager, said that all except one of the operators who ran jointly with his department had already adopted the 2d.

inimurn.

Farnworth and Horwich Councils opposed the application.

The increases granted to Nottingham and West Bridgford are expected to yield an extra £17.000 a year. In addition to the minimum fare, approval was given to raise some 2d. and all 24d. fares to 3d.: certain 3d. fares to 4d.; and some 4:t. and 41d. fares to 5d. Where the adult fare is 5d., the children's rate is increased to 3d, For West Bridgford, Mr. A. G. Mansfield said it was a pity there were no objections, because it was known that some sections of the public -were perturbed by the rising costs. Higher expenses would cost Nottingham £80,000 this year, and West Bridgford £6:000.

West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Ltd., have now applied for permission to raise fares on a number of routes following increases granted in February to Hardwicks Services, Ltd., Searborough.

Application has already been made by United Automobile Services, Ltd., to bring fares on certain of their services intoline with the new rates for Hardwicks.

West Yorkshire are also seeking authority to increase by 12iper cent. their fares on the Skipton-Scarborough express service.

Faced with an expected deficit of £13,000 on the current year's running, Birkenhead Corporation may apply for. another increase in fares later in the year.

Cllr. J. W. Oates, chairman of the finance committee, said that gross expenditure on the transport undertaking was estimated at £858,175 for the current .year, compared with £825,065 for 1955-56. The passenger peak appeared to have passed. Whereas in 1949-50 the undertaking carried more than 78m. passengers, only 681m. travelled on the buses in the past financial year.
