A,P.ROPOSAL to ban waiting in peak traffic zones" of Birmingham was last week considered by Birmingham Public Works Committee and referred to Sir Herbert Manzoni. the city surveyor. The peak traffic zones are the market area, Broad Street up to Five Ways, and certiin sections of Stratford Road.
It is proposed to ban waiting by all vehicles from 8 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. on weekdays. and from 8 a.m. to. 9.30 a.m. and from noon to 2 p m. on Saturdays. In some parts the prohibition would refer te both sides of the roads, but in others it would apply on the near side running into the city in the morning and on the other side in the evening.
Mr. C. E. Jordan, chairman of the road traffic section of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, last week described the plan as the "thin edge of the Wedge." He thought that the restrictions would soon be extended to a number of other roads.
NEW CENTRES FOR DRIVERS' CONTEST?
THERE is hope that, as a result of
a speech, last week, by Mr. M. J. Miles, secretary of the national organizing committee of the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, new centres for eliminating rounds will be opened up. He was speaking at a road safety organizers' course at Brighton. It is arranged annually by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Mr. Miles, whose speech was enthusiastically received, emphasized the special need for eliminating rounds in Newcastle upon •Tyne, Manchester, Liverpool, Taunton, Cardiff and London. It was hoped that there would be a good entry in the Oxford contest, which was to be held for the first time this year. Other eliminating rounds would take place in Coventry, Portsmouth, Leeds and Slough.
