XHIBITED at the Basle Fair, which closed recently,•was'a new range of oil engines from 15-180 b.h.p. having from one to 12 cylinders arranged in line, in V or in horizontally opposed formation. Manufactured by Fabrique Suisse de Locomotives et de. Machines (S.L.M.), Winterthur, the new engines have the same bore and stroke-110 mm. and 140 mm. respectively—and are all air-cooled four-stroke units. Another interesting item at the Fair was a new Berna rear-engined bus chassis. The oil engine is mounted transversely and offset in the chassis. A new Saurer transmission system comprising an eight-speed gearbox, partially automatic, designed originally for rail cars but now available for passenger chassis, was also shown. Eventually it is proposed to adapt the gearbox for goods-vehicle application. Afour-wheel-drive personnel carrier, built by Mowag, Kreuzlingen, for the Swiss armed forces, was exhibited. This is powered by an S.L.M.four-cylindered engine developing f,0b.h.p.
COUNCIL OPPOSES TICKET INTER-AVAILABILITY
TWO Scottish bus companies were recently granted permission to operate a system-of inter-availability of tickets betweenGlasgow and Kirkintilloch. They were W. Alexander and Sons, Ltd., Falkirk, and David Lawson, Ltd.. Kirkintilloch. The Alexander concern operates a Glasgow-Falkirk service, via Kirkintilloch. and David Lawson. Ltd.. works between Kilsyth and Glasgow, via .Kirkintilloch. Officials of the two companies said that the proposal was made as a result of approaches by members of the public. The application was opposed by Kilsvth Town,C,ouncil. Bailie Robert Caskie said that, in his opinion. Kirkintilloch was already adequately served.
