The total number of men who attended the various examinations showed an increase of 60 per cent, as compared with last year, and the written and practical work, in the opinion

C54 of the inspecting engineer to the C.M.U.A„, was of a higher class than in any prf3NliOUS year, except hi the matters of soldering and sweating in the practical examinations. The low standard of this work was entirely due' (as we have always observed ourselves) to neglect in cleaning and Preparing the work previous to applying the solder or

The inspecting, engineer draws special attention to the excellent paper in Class II. (petrol) written by E. Slater, of the . British -Vacuum Cleaner Co., Ltd. This is by far the best paper ever written in these examinations, and it was only due to Slitter's inability through illness to attend the practical examinations that lie could only be placed third in the list. The papers of J. P. Cox, of the Gas Light and Coke Co., and W. Radford, of the Westminster City Council, were very close to those of, E. Slater, the extra marks gained by them in the practical examination enabling them to surpass him; they. are, as will be observed, bracketed first in this class. A. Murray, J. Travers and Sons secured the necessary 85 per cent, of marks, which qualify him to sit in Class I. examination next year. The paper in Class IL (steam) of F. G. Mobbs, of the Suit Flour Mills Co., Ltd., is also of special merit, and is easily firSt in the class. It was alsosupported by good practical work.

The inspecting engineer places it on record that the ex. animations are increasing in popularity, and the men are so keen .that. he would not like to see them discontinued. In fact, he says, the time is new ripe for extending them to provincial sections with examinations held concurrently in various centres from papers issued from the headquarters Council.
