perceptions) can be deceptive, the Citroën Dispatch in H2L1 form, perceived to be the smallest of the contenders, actually has the highest claimed load volume of the group (6m3). At 1,188kg, its payload is close to the highest as well.

The figures might prove its leading load capacity, but that generosity doesn’t extend to the driving environment. All the drivers had negative comments regarding a cramped and low driving position, particularly in the footwell where the wheelarch intrusion caused varying degrees of discomfort. The handbrake location, to the right of the driving seat, was universally disliked.

The look and feel of the cab fixtures and fittings failed to win many friends, and doubtless contributed to numerous squeaks and rattles reported. Visibility also featured some unwelcome blindspots.

Once mastered, the combined audio and information systems, including Bluetooth, were liked, but storage was something of a mixture, with handy compartments at roof level, but nowhere to house the obligatory coffee-on-the go. The presence of the standard Trafficmaster unit was liked, even if its display wasn’t particularly. This, and the Bluetooth radio with USB input, are part of a generous standard offering on the Enterprise model that includes air-con, reverse parking sensors, a steel bulkhead and electrically-heated and folding mirrors.

On the move, though, the Dispatch attracted more favour. The engine was regarded as willing and able, provided the six-speed gearbox was utilised to keep it on the boil. In general use, the chassis dynamics were perfectly acceptable, although some understeer became apparent under pressure and the ride could lose its composure on poorer surfaces. The brakes were perfectly adequate, but attracted a couple of critical comments about lack of bite.
