To get the best deal on a truck you need to shop around. in the first of a new series CM considers the markefs leading fleet tractor and its rivals.

For our first Shop Around feature we're reviewing fleet spec tractors: three aides, standard sleeper cab and as close to 420hp as possible, concentrating on 02-plate vehicles.

These are the core vehicles in the used market because they were so dominant between 2001 and 2003. Because fleet trucks saturate the used market the margins, depending on who you talk to, range between nothing and negligible. Get too much of one product on the forecourt or under the hammer and customers will shy away.

These days the independents are more selective when it comes to buying and selling fleet stock.They will generally major on the Swedes or Dutch with, at a push, one of the two German manufacturers. But it's always worth looking at the alternatives-perhaps the motor for you isn't what you thought it might he...
