Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The multi-axle market always performs well at Vanheim Auctions. Jeremy Martell gives CM the nod on a money spinning sector.

THE NEWS THAT the Olympics will be held in the UK in 2012 will force the price of used tippers to go through the roof.

But that's in the future; at the moment it's all about supply and demand. As with other vehicles, the lead time on new 6x4 and 8x4 chassis-cabs is getting longer, hampered by the fact that operators need the bodies fitted to them as well.

And turning to the used sector to plug the gap isn't the straightforward alternative it might seem because this sector also has its share of supply problems. You know it's a sellers' market when a 51-plated Volvo FM12 8x4 tipper attracted a bid of £30,000 (ex-VAT) at auction (not on a Manheim site) and still didn't sell.

Those multi-axle rigids that do go under the hammer are fought over by exporters, domesti trade and end users. The general rule of thumb is that vehicles of more than seven years old ar likely to go overseas.

On the other hand, anything registered post-2001 ends up back in the UK market. With strong margins on late-year products traders are more than happy to handle buyin; and selling tippers among themselves, before 211ing directly to end users without resorting ) public auctions.

Martell confirms that post-2001 multi-axle gids are rare at auctions these days. The olume at Manheim Auctions over the past 2ven to 10 years has fallen, in line with tcreasing domestic construction projects. And as the numbers fall, the prices they 2ach inevitably increase.

Rising demand from exporters has helped us trend, hut the main reason continues to be le short supply into the entire used market, ot just auctions. •
