THE DEPARTMENT of Transport in Ireland is back-peddling on reports that the Republic might cut its fuel tax in the next Budget.

The prospect of a cut was raised by transport minister Martin Cullen, who said in an interview with the I rishTimes that the issue would be "seriously considered".

Officials at the Department stress that any decision on a cut in duty on fuel is a matter for finance minister Brian Cowen."It's clearly an issue for finance rather than us," says a spokeswoman.

Irish hauliers hope the 7.5% cut in diesel duty granted in 2000 will be repeated this December.

The Irish Road Haulage Association, like its UK counterparts, is becoming increasingly agitated by rising fuel prices.

The association has already made it clear that a freeze in duty would not be enough: it is demanding a cut.
