Take a stroll with us through the little sideroads of haulage, the diversions and detours, the quirky, the quixotic and the downright strange...

Well, he did it After a boozy pub conversation turned into a masochistic charity stunt, Dave Binning found himself reversing a Renault Magnum 420 and curtainsider trailer down the entire length of the world-famous Cheddar Gorge.

Binning traversed the three-mile slope backwards down the cheesily named hill many expected him to wedge his 50-footer in because he is, in his words, "a nutter". In fact the nutter was even focused enough to stop his truck when he spied a nail in the road and became concerned he might puncture his tyres.

So Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare is now on course to be presented with 26,000 in charity money for a new lifesigns machine. Mercifully, the old one didn't have to be wheeled out following a Binning-related roll down the Gorge...

Speaking of raising money, a CMnewshound brings word of an almost suspiciously generous act of philanthropy from one of the UK's pallet networks The Pallet Network, to be exact. Network development manager Peter Day "encouraged" members to donate £100 each towards the Antigua honeymoon of newly wed managing director Adam Leonard (and his wife, naturally) and raised a whopping £7,000 in the process.

Lucky Leonard, described as "popular" in the company's press release (we don't think that goes far enough to describe what must be his near Christ-like charisma) was obviously overwhelmed by the generous gesture.

The company, which is confident of being as big as any of the myriad pallet networks around, either has a terrifyingly persuasive development manager in employment -Joe Pesci's character in Goodfeilas, anyone? or a universally loved and benign boss, happy to spread his love wherever he goes -James Stewart in It a Wonderful Life, perhaps?

And in the spirit of the newly weds, we are happy to believe the latter.
