Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• LGVs will not be banned in Sowerby Bridge, the Yorkshire town where six people were killed by a runaway truck last year, despite press reports to the contrary.

Calder&le Council last week decided instead to survey LGVs travelling through the town. The £2000 survey will help establish how many trucks use the town's steep roads and what proportion are through-traffic. Between 500 and 750 HGV movements a day use the downhill approaches to Bolton Brow, where in September last year a Fewston Transport tipper with defective brakes crashed into a BT van, a shop and two houses.

Another truck ran out of control on the second downhill approach to Bolton Brow this summer, resulting in minor injuries to the driver, says assistant director of highways and technical services Keith Noble. While some Calderdale councillors are determined to ban trucks from the area, council officers advised that weight restrictions could divert traffic to other steep and congested roads.
