AMERICAN consultants visiting Britain to give advice on increasing efficiency sometimes complain at the variety of our products, from car models to pints of beer. Public transport fares are no exception.

Mr. R. M. Senior, recently appointed costs officer of London Transport, tells me of an amusing incident which underlined this point. Two Americans were explaining their experience with electronic fare collection systems.

They gazed quizzically at a long list of concessionary fares— which would have to be allowed for in any British counterpart Then one said to the other: "Say, could you fix that darned barrier to recognize a shipwrecked mariner pushing a dog in a pram?"
