rrHE light delivery van always holds 1 a place of special privilege in the French commercial-motor world. Times may be difficult and heavy vehicles taxed so savagely, in favour of Stateowned railways, that manufacturers become discouraged, but the demand for light delivery chassis remains unabated.

Seen in an accompanying picture is the 1940 Peugeot half-tonner, which will make its first appearance at the Paris Salon on October 21. Like many other French light chassis, this new Peugeot has been developed from a

successful touring model with many modifications such as reinforced frame, special gear ratios, etc.

It will be known as the Peugeot " 202 U." The engine is an overheadvalve unit with four cylinders measuring 68 mm. by 78 mm. (1,133 c.c.), and the frame has box-section, pressed-steel side-members with tubular cross-members.

A40 The Peugeot system of independent forward suspension is employed, with the addition of four hydraulic shock absorbers. Up-to-date engine features include Alpax light-alloy head and detachable cylinder liners.

Equipped with standard steel body. work, this van is stated to be capable of 56 m.p.h. with fall pay-load, ‘vhilst fuel consumption is exceedingly low. An average of 32 m.p.g. is claimed under ordinary working conditions, but this figure may be improved upon on long runs.
