Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Volkswagen has updated its Transporter with a new Euro-5 engine range that claims to reduce fuel consumption by an average of 10%.

VOLKSWAGEN'S shift from niche outsider to mainstream player in LCV world has not been an accident; if there's one thing VW does well, it is build solid vehicles.

Although they might not be the cheapest choice around, take into account running costs and residual values, and the argument for owning a VW is stronger.

What has been pivotal, though, in the shift VW has engineered, is the sales of its best-selling Transporter.

The latest T5 version (as the firm calls it) was introduced back in 2004, and besides a surprisingly gruff engine, it was generally agreed that the Transporter was among the best medium-sized vans on the market.

Now it's time for its obligatory mid-life update. Aside from the obvious cosmetic enhancements at the front. and new lights at the rear. it gets a new Euro-5 2.0-litre TDI engine with four outputs 83hp, 101hp, 138hp and 178hp which is claimed to cut fuel consumption and emissions by 10%.

The last three outputs can be specified with VW's new sevenspeed DSG automatic gearbox, which incorporates a two-clutch arrangement for exceptionally smooth shifting.

Both the 138hp and 178hp options are also available with the 4MOTION four-wheel-drive system, which features fourthgeneration Haldex coupling.

Fuel economy

There's also uprated ESP fitted, which includes hill-start assist, along with emergency braking lights, which flash the brake lights under harsh deceleration, then activate the hazard lights if the vehicle becomes stationary.

Also incorporated is a gearshift indicator light designed to optimise cog swapping for fuel economy, together with a driver's scat, a new steering wheel, and fabrics. The options list also includes the Side Assist lane changing system, which alerts the driver of any vehicles in the blind spot. and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Slick shifting

On the road, the Transporter feels just like the old version, which means it's pretty good in every aspect, Its previous Achilles' heel the engine has now been addressed thanks to the addition of the 2.0-litre TDI unit, It's smoother and progressive and this is aided by the short throw and slick gearshift, which allows you to really push the engine.

Through the corners, the T5 is impressively composed, with the accurate steering allowing you to position it where you want it.

The interior hasn't changed. It is still practical and comfortable. •
