days if their systems broke down, because they have not made the right contingency plans, a survey claims this week.

Only 30% of managers know if they are properly covered by insurance if their computer fails; 16% have tested an emergency plan, and no more than 14% vet their employees who use computers, warns the survey by management consultancy Arthur Young.

In all 48 transport firms were included in a total of 500 companies which were interviewed, in Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Denmark. The survey found that executives understand the risks — 86% admit they could not last more than a few days if their computer broke down — but they do not take the right precautions with their own businesses.

Co-author Mark Evans says the problem is that computer safety is often delegated to junior managers who do not have the authority to take many decisions: "Computer security should be discussed and understood in company boardrooms," he says.
