Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• More uninformed criticism — this time from a haulier who chooses to lambast the RHA from outside the Association!

Ms Sue Hart (Dear Sir, CM, September 17-23) would be welcome to apply for membership of the RHA, and if accepted, would join the growing band of owner-drivers who comprise a large, influential and valuable section of the membership.

As a member, her critical voice could be heard loud and clear through the democratic communication channels of the Association and, if enough members agreed with her, she could influence the Association's policy-making.

"It only needs one person in each area to approach their local free paper," she says. As an RHA member she would have the opportunity to persuade 10,000 hauliers to do just that.

It may interest Ms Hart to know that a large proportion of the time of the RHA district managers is spent assisting and advising owner-driver members on lorry operations.

As an RHA member, she would learn of the enormous amount of time, effort and money spent in educating the general public on the benefits lorries bring to society, and she would have the opportunity to influence the way in which those resources are deployed.
