THE TRAILER manufacturers have traditionally been the fir to suffer when there is a slump in the industry. Anyoi wanting to predict the economic trend in the road transpc industry would do well to watch the trailer market.

The past two years have been years which the manufacturers of trailers would prefer to forget although there are signs that the steady downward gradient in sales is levelling off.

During the past year the accent has been on the Middle East as far as trucks are concerned and this year's Show gives an indication of how much business is being done in that market by the trailer men.

A steel-bodied tipping semitrailer of 25cum (33cuyd) capacity is shown by Crane Fruehauf as part of an export order intended for Saudi Arabia. It has been developed from the UK aluminium-bodied version. For use both on and off the road it has been fitted with heavyduty suspension and sand tyres.

Crane Freuhauf has now set up a factory in Iran to take advantage of the boom in this market as it has in Nigeria, Algeria and Libya.

Heavy-duty trailers, whether for Middle East operation or not, are very much in evidence at Earls Court this year.

On the Merriworth stand is the Jumbo which is a hydraulically operated -kneelingtrailer intended for Dubai. This is a development of a design first introduced last year and the show model has a capacity of 45 tons. The design is such that the trailer has ram-operated folding

The latest PB 80 flat platform from Crane Fruehauf uses a single-leaf suspension system.

legs rather than the telescor variety. With a countersprur folding headboard plant or vel cles are driven on and off in tl down position.

Front loading low-loaders a very much in evidence this yeE Northern Vehicle Distributo Ltd is showing its Northe Lo-Loader which is a standa 12.2m (40ft) platform trail with electro-hydraulic telescor landing gear which enables tt trailer to be lowered at the fro end.

The headboards fold fc ward to form a loading ran in a similar manner to tt Merriworth device. Power f this operation comes from tl tractive unit's electric system v an extension lead. The trailer c show is designed for 20.3-ton r (20-ton) load capacity.

The Hydroneck detachab gooseneck trailer on the Kir Truck equipment stand al! permits front loading. As well being detachable, the geomet of the gooseneck can be altere, using hydraulic rams, to cat for hump back bridges and c highway situations. In the nc mal transit attitude, two lockir pins are operated to retain 9 trailer's position and relieve 9 load on the hydraulics.

When the trailer platform dropped off, the goosenec remains coupled to the tracti% unit's fifth-wheel and a hydra, lic stinger (a small prop) is USE to keep the gooseneck lev which makes recouplin simpler. The King Trailer c show is designed to take boar up to 30 tons.

The Crane Fruehauf lov loader has a capacity of aroun 25 tons and is shown providin a base for the company's Midd East tipping trailer.

Taskers' version for th market is the F6 LB66 featurin the Tasklift hydraulic nec which is shown at Earls Court i the detached position alongsid the main trailer. Taskers clair that his system means that on man can unload a piece of plar equipment in only a few minutE with the power being provide by a separate power pac mounted on the trailer or via pto gear.
