Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Mr A. G. Lea's letter (CM September 24) concerning staff training contains some telling points. Nevertheless, the "home-grown" approach to management training does lead to parochial attitudes and unadventurous policies, as the haulage industry has found to its cost.

Assuming that a company wishes to avoid the perils of recruiting graduates with "fancy" ideas and a high turn-over rate it could easily recruit a transport student from this or City of London Polytechnic and gain a worker with down to earth knowledge and a grasp of nobnomie theory.

Incidentally. Mr Lea may be interested .to know that we have on our Higher National Diploma Course in Business Studies iTransport) two young men who came to us with Technical Certificates in Motor Vehicle Fitting rather than the usual "A" levels or O.N.D. We will welcome his company's "bright young men" and give them the academic training which we believe complements, rather than opposes, practical '' know-how".

D. H. STEWART-DAVID, Lecturer in charge of Transport Studies, Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic
